Rising Damp is usually a big problem of damp in buildings. Water will usually rise through capillary action in the porous material of the wall. Water rises in the same way as wax goes up in a candle wick. Rising damp will usually not go any higher than 1.5m high apart from extreme cases. There are four usual causes why rising damp happens these are:
- The breakdown of the old damp proof course fails.
- In some older buildings a damp proof course may have never been installed.
- A damp proof course (DPC) may have been bridged i.e a new installed path may be higher than the original DPC.
- A cavity wall may be blocked.
Once our surveyor has done a survey then we can select the appropriate damp proofing method to prevent rising damp happening for a guaranteed 30 years. We only use BBA Accredited damp proof creams. All of these products are proven and tested. When an effective DPC has been completed, it is usually necessary to eliminate the second problem of moister attracting mineral salts (hygroscopic salts) on the brickwork. We can install a cavity membrane system and re-plaster your wall to prevent this reoccurring problem in Swansea covering: The Mumbles, Carmarthen, Bridgend, Porthcawl, Port Talbot, Neath, Llanelli, Sketty, South Gate and Langland Bay.
Penetrating damp usually happens when there is a fault in part of the building. This could be a hole in the roof, a broken gutter or just a badly fitted window or door. Sometimes it could be that the building bricks are very porous allowing the water to soak in like a sponge.
We can stop penetrating damp and hygroscopic salts (refer to rising damp). At Restorahome Damp Proofing we use state of the art cavity membrane systems. This is much better the the old method which is done by applying a salt inhibitor then a mix a cement based damp proof membrane. This method is not 100% effective. There is too much chance for human error and there is no way of knowing if a barrier has been created properly into the plaster is on and its too late.
With the cavity wall membrane system we use, there is no need for a salt inhibitor and you can see the physical barrier once it has been installed ensuring an affective stop to penetrating damp. It is, by far, superior than any other method known and is less time consuming saving the inconvenience caused to the customer.
